You don’t need to travel to the South of France or Japan to enjoy beautiful lavender fields. Instead you can visit Hitchin Lavender, which is a flower field close to London. In Hertfordshire, you can find the wonderful Hitchin Lavender Field. Visiting Hitchin Lavender is a worthwhile day out from the city.
Here you can smell the fresh scent of lavender while you walk around and (legally) cut some bunches to take home with you.
What to expect:
To enter the fields you must pay £6 per adult, £3 per child, under 5’s go free and it’s £4 for blue badge holders. You will be issued with a pair of scissors and a little paper bag to fill up with lavender.
Pay attention to signs on the day, because they will tell you where you can and can’t cut lavender from.
I had two hours here, but it didn’t feel like it was long enough to enjoy this slice of heaven. Three hours would be a nice amount of time to cut some lavender, take some photos and have a drink or snack afterwards.
After the harvest:
After you have collected your lavender you’ll be thirsty. There are two cafes to choose from. One right in front of the lavender fields which has a patio seating area and a children’s wooden tractor. Another cafe is next to a larger children’s play area. Both have lovely seating areas and sell delicious lavender based drinks and snacks, such as lavender lemonade.
Between the main lavender field and the children’s play area is a small field with different varieties of lavender. You cannot cut the lavender from here, but it is pretty to look at and children can enjoy running around and burning off some energy.
Opening Hours:
Tuesday and Friday are late nights and it’s open until 10pm on these days. For the rest of the week everything is shut by 5pm. The last entry is always 30 minutes before closing.
Tips:
There is no public transport, so driving is essential. If you type in ‘Hitchin Lavender’ to your sat nav or Google Maps, you will find it easily.
Photography courses are run for approximately £50 a session, but must be booked in advance.
It’s a worthwhile day out and I highly recommend visiting Hitchin Lavender. It’s great to escape the city and visit a flower field close to London.
