Is it worth hiking to Gergeti Trinity Church, or should you take a taxi?

Visiting Gergeti Trinity Church is a place that should be on any Georgia itinerary. While the church is nice, the views and surrounding area are what makes this place special.

How to get to the hiking trail

Many people take the easy option of catching a taxi up, but this is missing out on the beautiful hiking trails that lead to the church. Hiking to the church is beautiful and rewarding and I 100% recommended skipping the taxi and going by foot.

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast in town first

You can put Gergeti Trinity Church into Google Maps and keep going until the road gets narrow. Find somewhere to park the car for the day. When you reach the area by the car park go left, duck under a barrier and walk past a shop. Then you will arrive at the foot of the mountain. Take the path on the left. The other path is very steep and the views are not as good. The path on the left meanders past streams and beautiful views. Keep going on this path and you will eventually reach the church.

Once you arrive in the area, spend some time exploring the different hill tops, fields and of course, the church.

There is a big car park by the church. The people taking a taxi will arrive, take some photos and leave. You’ll be able to find lots of peace and quiet away from the tourist in the hills around the church. The area is stunning!

The hills are alive…

You can go back to town on the same trail. At the end of the hike, before you walk through the car park is a wonderful little outdoor bar. Here they will supply you warm blankets, gigantic servings of Georgian wine, stew and grilled meat cooked on an open fire and generally awesome vibes. This is the perfect place to end your day and is skipped by everyone catching a taxi.
