How to visit Bethlehem without a tour

Are you wondering how to visit Bethlehem without a tour? Bethlehem is an ancient city, rich in history, but also troubled by political issues due to being in the Palestinian Territories. When you mention visiting Palestine to anybody, they immediately think of a dangerous territory to visit. Most people take a tour here, but as I’m not a fan of organised tours I decided to go it alone and found it surprisingly easy and safe. Keep reading to find out how to visit Bethlehem without a tour as a solo traveler.

How to get to Bethlehem

You can take the bus 231 from the Arab Quarter in Jerusalem. The bus leaves from the bus station just opposite the Damascus Gate. It costs 7 shekels and departs every 30 minutes or so.

Tip: The bus continues to run during Shabbat.

It takes about 40 minutes and drops you off not too far from the Church of the Nativity. The bus terminates here, so you don’t need to worry about missing your stop.

Once you’re there

I had intended to just go solo when I arrived and walk around, but when I saw Google maps misplacing my location I just knew I would be in for a day of getting lost in the heat (I always get lost). Taxi drivers wait for tourists to arrive at the bus stop, so if you’re confident to not get lost, just politely decline the taxi drivers, smile and walk away to explore on your own.

I decided I wouldn’t mind having somebody drive me around and bargained a price with a taxi driver. He took me to see the wall that separates Israel and the Palestinian Territory, the Church of the Nativity, the Milk Grotto, the Town Center and offered insights into life as a Palestinian along the way. There are also many other places that can be visited in the area if you have time; such as churches with views over the Dead Sea. Having a local as my guide was a humbling way to spend a few hours.

My taxi driver, Asad answered any questions I had and just wanted me to enjoy my time in his city. I felt safe and instantly knew that he was a kind and trustworthy human. I sat in the front seat and spoke to Asad for the whole trip. I was really happy that I came alone to Bethlehem and hired a local taxi driver. I felt the experience was more authentic than a commercial bus tour. The bus tours only show you the highlights. Hiring a local taxi driver gave me an insight into Palestine.

Getting Back to Jerusalem

The bus back to Jerusalem leaves from exactly the same spot it arrives. On the way back you will pass through a checkpoint where officials will board the bus and check every passengers passport, so don’t forget your passport!

Good to know information about Bethlehem:

All the shops in Bethlehem are shut on Friday. This may be good or bad for you. I thought Bethlehem looked so pretty when everything was closed.

My only regret was not having the time to visit more of Palestine, especially Jericho. Visiting at least one Palestinian Territory when you travel to Israel should be at the top of everyone’s list.
